The Hundred Betting Guide – Who Will Win In 2022?

The Hundred: At a Glance

While many cricket punters will be familiar with T20 internationals and IPL betting, The Hundred is a somewhat unique offering. It is a condensed limited-overs (100-ball) format, consisting of eight teams based out of cities across England and Wales.

The first season of The Hundred was held in 2021, which the Southern Brave won. In 2022, The Hundred (Men’s) begins on August 3 (Wednesday), while the women’s competition kicks off on August 11 (Thursday).

The teams competing in The Hundred 2022 are Birmingham Phoenix (Edgbaston), London Spirit (Lord’s), Manchester Originals (Old Trafford, Manchester), Northern Superchargers (Headingley, Leeds), Oval Invincibles (Kia Oval), Southern Brave (Ageas Bowl, Southampton), Trent Rockets (Trent Bridge), and Welsh Fire (Sophia Gardens, Cardiff).

The Hundred 2022: Betting Tips and Predictions

The Hundred is a month-long tournament that gets underway on August 3 this year. You can expect a betting frenzy as the competition edges ever closer, with many of India’s leading in-play cricket betting sites offering various markets and competitive odds across matches.

The first season of The Hundred was compelling with some brilliant cricket, but it is expected to be even better in 2022. Due to Covid-related restrictions and security protocol, several overseas signings could not play in the opening edition last year. But that will change this time.

  • After dominating the first season of The Hundred, the Southern Brave outfit will be favored to retain their title, primarily after they have managed to keep most of the players who won them the title and by adding Finn Allen to their ranks.
  • The London Spirit was the worst-performing team last season, so they got the first pick in the 2022 draft. They picked Kieron Pollard and will be expected to go much better this season.

That means that the tournament will be lit up by stars like Pollard, Andre Russell, Glenn Maxwell, and Adam Milne, coupled with domestic superstars like Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, and Eoin Morgan.

At the time of writing, the bookmakers are favouring the Southern Brave to win The Hundred 2022.

Who Will Win The Hundred?

The Hundred should make for fantastic viewing, though it feels like anybody’s guess as to who could walk away with the trophy.

  • Southern Brave are the defending champions, but Birmingham Phoenix was probably the most appealing team in the first season of the competition. They have some of the competition’s most exciting domestic cricketers in captain Moeen Ali, Liam Livingstone, and Will Smeed. Benny Howell and Chris Woakes should be good with the ball.
  • Birmingham Phoenix bought Imran Tahir back in the overseas wildcard draw, and it seems the team is in good shape to beat Southern Brave.
  • The other team to note is Manchester Originals, having made some value additions in the off-season. They will see a lot more of Jos Buttler, while Jamie Overton and Laurie Evans are good domestic buys. Also, Andre Russell and Wanindu Hasaranga are really good overseas recruits.

The Hundred Betting 2022: Team Preview

1. Birmingham Phoenix

  • The Birmingham Phoenix was beaten in the final in the inaugural season of The Hundred.
  • That said, it was arguably the most exciting team of the tournament and will be looking to go one step better in the 2022 campaign.
  • They look to have all bases covered and will want to turn Edgbaston into a fortress once again as they go in search of their maiden title under Moeen Ali’s captaincy.

Key Players

  • Moeen Ali (c): Captain and explosive batter who can offer some quality spin.
  • Liam Livingstone: One of the cleanest hitters in world cricket at the moment. No English ground is big enough to contain him.
  • Adam Milne: The New Zealand international was the leading wicket taker in the first season of the competition. Birmingham was quick to retain him when the chance arose.

Birmingham Phoenix full squad

2. London Spirit

  • The first season of the competition was not a good one for the London Spirit. Much was expected of the Lord’s-based outfit, but they didn’t deliver on those expectations and finished bottom of the table.
  • That said, they were probably the unluckiest of the lot during the last season. That’s because many of their overseas players didn’t feature in the tournament due to Covid-related restrictions.
  • We believe London Spirit is much better equipped to do a whole lot better this season. The franchise will be motivated to win the tournament for their former coach Shane Warne, who died tragically earlier in the year.

Key Players

  • Eoin Morgan: The Irishman has given up international cricket and will be able to put all of his attention into the London Spirit campaign.
  • Glenn Maxwell: One of the biggest hitters in the game with the ability to bowl some tidy spin too. A live wire on the field, Maxwell’s absence during the 2021 Hundred was another reason why their campaign got derailed. At his best, he is a fearsome batter who can go after spinners and seamers with equal ease. No ground is big enough to contain him, especially Lord’s, so Maxwell seems like a shrewd signing for the London Spirit.
  • Liam Dawson: Handy all-round cricketer who can find those gaps and clear massive boundaries at will. Plus, he’s bowling better than ever.

London Spirit full squad

3. Manchester Originals

  • Much was expected of the Manchester Originals, but they delivered little in the last season of The Hundred. The team was impacted by international call-ups and overseas players unable to make it. A sixth-place finish at the end of the 2021 season was all they could achieve.
  • The Originals didn’t slack, though, and did some great work in the draft to shape their squad much better for The Hundred in 2022. They brought in top domestic talents like Laurie Evans and Jamie Overton, while Richard Gleeson seems an inspired choice from the Vitality wildcard draft.

Key Players

  • Jos Buttler: Is there a better batter against the white ball in world cricket right now? Buttler will head into The Hundred off the back of an amazing Indian Premier League campaign and a ballistic ODI run fest against the Netherlands more recently. There is no more explosive batter in world cricket than him right now.
  • Andre Russell: A veteran of T20 franchise leagues and with good reason. When Russell gets going, there’s not much the opposition can do, really.
  • Richard Gleeson: One of the best death bowlers in the Vitality Blast, which has earned him England recognition this summer. Should be a top player on his home ground.

Manchester Originals full squad

4. Northern Superchargers

  • The Northern Superchargers finished fifth in the inaugural season, paying the price both for a raft of international call ups and the inability to defend their home ground, Headingley, which has become something of a batting paradise. They will need to be aware of that as they embark on The Hundred 2022, but Ben Stokes is unlikely to be around much, and that isn’t going to help their cause.
  • Like the other outfits, the Northern Superchargers are going to have more of their original overseas picks coming over in this season, which in theory, should make them stronger.

Key Players

  • Harry Brook: One of the most exciting domestic batters in the competition who is playing on his home county ground.
  • Ben Stokes: How much the Superchargers get of the England Test captain remains to be seen, but when he is available, Stokes will be a key player for the Headingley outfit. He’s a perfect floater within the top six, which will be crucial to the flexibility and balance of the Northern Superchargers.
  • David Willey: England international and IPL regular. Can swing the new ball and can hit the ball a country mile. Another who is competing on his home county ground.

Northern Superchargers full squad

5. Oval Invincibles

  • The Oval Invincibles were one of the favourites to win the inaugural season, but that didn’t eventually happen.
  • They won the very first match of The Hundred 2021 but could only add three more to that tally before missing out on the eliminator by a single point.
  • One advantage the team has is their two matches against London Spirit, the worst-performing team in the competition a year ago.

Key Players

  • Jason Roy: The Englishman can sometimes blow hot and cold, but when he is on song, he can take apart any attack in the world. Been in good form this summer.
  • Sam Curran: England all-rounder with plenty of Indian Premier League experience. Curran can bat anywhere in the order and bowl effectively at the start as well as the death.
  • Sunil Narine: Yet another player with heaps of IPL experience. Narine had the best economy rate at the 2022 Vitality Blast, going at just 5.96 an over. His 20 balls will be crucial for the Oval Invincibles. Importantly, he can also smash a long ball.

Oval Invincibles full squad

6. Southern Brave

  • The Southern Brave won the inaugural season of The Hundred last year, despite an ordinary start to their campaign.
  • With Mahela Jayawardena at the helm of coaching affairs, the Southern Brave are the bookie’s favourites this time when it comes to The Hundred betting.
  • The fact they won the competition having lost their opening two matches will give them a lot of confidence should they begin this campaign slowly. The experience of winning is what matters, and they look like the team to beat once again.

Key Players

  • James Vince: The captain is one of the best players in English cricket. As on the day of writing this guide for The Hundred betting, Vince is the leading run scorer in the 2022 Vitality Blast.
  • Tim David: One of the most improved players in world cricket in recent times is the Singapore international, Tim David. A player who has impressed with the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League, the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League, and more recently, Lancashire in the Vitality Blast.
  • Chris Jordan: At his best, he is up there with the finest death bowlers in England right now.

Southern Brave full squad

7. Trent Rockets

  • Trent Rockets were expected to perform well in the opening season of The Hundred, and that is exactly how it panned out. However, they were beaten in the eliminator, so a positive campaign ended in heartache.
  • When you consider their home ground, which is Trent Bridge, the Rockets were not involved in as many high-scoring matches, which was a surprise.
  • The chief reason for that was the quality of their bowling attack. So, if the Rockets can bowl as well this season and sort out the issue of playing Joe Root and Dawid Malan together (both of whom play a similar role that’s anything but power-hitting), we believe they can probably do one better this time.

Key Players

  • Alex Hales: Arguably the most aggressive opening batter in English cricket who would have had a serious international career had it not been for off-field misdemeanours. England’s loss is the Rockets’ gain.
  • Rashid Khan: The Afghan remains one of the best bowlers in white ball cricket at the moment. The leg spinner is as good an overseas option as there is, especially in what has been a hot summer, where the wickets are going to be dry and turning. He’s the Rockets’ bank for those 20 deliveries that he’s going to bowl.
  • Marchant de Lange: Had the best bowling figures of anyone last season, when he took 5/20 against the Southern Brave on his way to a tournament high of 12 wickets overall. His pace will be crucial here.

Trent Rockets full squad

8. Welsh Fire

  • The Welsh Fire looked like serious title contenders last season when they won their opening three matches. But once Jonny Bairstow left for England national duty, they couldn’t find another win, and their promising campaign fizzled out quickly.
  • This time, Welsh Fire have gone about their picks smartly, so hopes should be high in Cardiff as long as they can find a way to perform without Bairstow, who they are unlikely to get much of because of the upcoming England vs South Africa tour.

Key Players

  • Jonny Bairstow: A fine wicketkeeper, Jonny Bairstow’s exploits at the international level are well-known. While he’s perhaps more adept at churning out runs consistently in Tests and ODIs, the format of The Hundred looks perfectly designed to suit him. That said, it remains to be seen how much of him the Welsh Fire will actually see throughout the campaign.
  • Sam Hain: Hain’s 50-over form has been remarkable, scoring runs risk free almost regularly and rotating strike effectively against spin. As of early 2021, Hain had an all-time highest List A average.
  • David Miller: The South African is a proven finisher with the bat, and on the short straight boundaries at Cardiff, Miller could really enjoy himself.

Welsh Fire full squad

The Hundred 2022: Tournament Structure

The Hundred is still a relatively new format, and it will be fascinating to see how things unravel. But when it comes to betting on the competition, you must know how does The Hundred work exactly.

  • Each squad will comprise 15 players, with a maximum of 3 overseas players allowed. A draft system took place, which saw players split into salary bands, and teams were allowed to select two players from each salary bracket.
  • The men and women’s versions of The Hundred will run alongside.
  • No match will last longer than 2.5 hours.
  • After the group stages, the semi-final is scheduled on September 2 and the final a day later. Covid restrictions have been lifted since the first season, and grounds can now be packed to capacity.
